Our CBS News featured therapy has helped thousands of individuals with dementia increase their independence by assisting them with relearning and sharpening skills. We do this through a process known as Errorless Learning (EL). As the name implies, Errorless Learning prevents errors that can cause many issues, including low self-esteem, anxiety, and frustration, all of which affect the learning process.

In this teaching method, the difficulty of an activity is carefully monitored and slowly increased as the client becomes more proficient. Some of the skills we’ve helped individuals relearn and become more adept at include:

• Writing

• Reading

• Simple arithmetic

• Color and number identification

• Feeding

• Using a phone

“My husband relearned how to spell and write his name. He hasn’t been able to do that for over a year.”

Barbara Lavine, Rotonda West, FL

The likelihood of an individual with dementia relearning or improving upon a skill is greater for those experiencing mild to moderate decline. Success has much to do with the frequency of practice. Studies show that people participating in an activity two to six days a week receive the most benefits.
